This is storm fallen beech, sourced one hundred meters down the road from us. It’s a tree that I’ve walked past my whole life and was sad to see it had fallen in the strong winds earlier this year.
I was even sadder to find it was destined to be firewood. After reasoning with the tree surgeons I managed to save a good portion of the main trunk. Being just under a meter in diameter it was a bit of an undertaking to get it back to the workshop.
The wood was delightfully clean but with a beautiful flame pattern running through so I decided to make some pieces like this rather than letting the wood spalt.
My idea was to create a piece where it looks like the flames in the wood are licking up the side of the bowl and really try to show off this remarkable natural occurrence.
So glad I went to the effort to recover this wood. I couldn’t bare it just to be burnt.
- do not let fruit rot in the bowl
